Mom's Note: The Dutch are very good at languages, probably because they have been among the best merchants of the whole world for hundreds of years! They seem to be able to slip between English and Dutch in the middle of a sentence. They even seem to think in English. Our friends who speak other languages say that they can also do this with German, French, and Spanish (and I suspect other languages as well). So we didn't need to learn Dutch in order to get around. But the local greengrocer, the plumber and the guys at the Tabac Cafe all helped us out when we tried to learn a few words in Dutch during our stay, and seemed to be very pleased that we tried.

Cassidy's Note: When we went to Amsterdam we were all very happy. First of all it was clean-- it didn't have pollution and there weren't any cows, donkeys or sheep walking around the streets. But we were sure that they didn't speak English, but then we found out we were wrong . Everybody spoke English! And the few that didn't speak English tried their best, plus everybody was nice!

These were the words I learned:

Hello is "dag" or "hallo"
Goodbye is "dag" (pronounced "dak" or "dach")
Yes is "ja" (pronounced "ya")
No is "nee" (pronounced "nay")
Please is "alstublieft" (pronounced "aw stew bleef")
Thank You is "Dank U" (pronounced "dunk ooh")
You're welcome is "geen dank" (pronounced "gain dunk")
excuse me is . . .pardon
sorry is . . .sorry
"My name is Cassidy " is "Ik heet Cassidy." (pronounced "Ick hate Cassidy.")

On stores we saw signs like "Ingang" for entrance and "Uitgang" for exit and "Geslotten" for closed. Toilets are called W.C's (meaning water closet), or toiletten.

We've gotten all these words in the game below. It is easiest to copy the letter on to your own paper in a grid or boxes. Remember the words may be backward, forward, diagonal or straight.

ENJOY!
